How Deep Are My Ruts?

May 20, 2025

Denny – Tuesday. How glad I am, we took the extra time today to drive back to see the Guernsey Ruts! Clint Udy sent me a picture of them late the night before and after I saw it, I knew I couldn’t let Kevin miss out on seeing them merely because we felt we needed to move the trailer ahead so we could get to Salt Lake at a decent hour.

I was actually taken aback when I saw the photos but was even more astounded when I saw them in person. We not only enjoyed the ruts but the scenery around them. I like to believe some of us were invited to help God create this earth. That being said, there are some pretty incredible minds and talents being manifest behind every turn in the road. I hope I get to thank them all some day for the joy they’ve made possible for me on this trip.

There are ruts in the area near the Deep Guernsey Ruts

Clint shared a “modern day lesson” for the ruts and it stuck with me. Look at the pattern the repetitive rolling of wagons down that hill made in the rock. His quote made me grateful for the “pattern” my pioneer ancestors and even my parents and grandparents etched into my life through their examples. Those Guernsey Ruts are not going to be erased or eroded any time soon. They are cut deep. As I hope the faith and character traits my ancestors battled so hard to scratch deep in their lives for my benefit – will remain easily seen and recognized in my generation and others following behind.

Without something to give perspective a photograph can't show how truly deep the ruts are. Kevin is 6'2" tall!
